Our Story

Cheese Knife

Based in the beautiful Bitterroot Valley in western Montana, Dan created Hammer & Tine to satisfy his desire to create tools that are functional works of art; they are intended to be used and admired. He is an avid outdoorsman with a culinary background. He takes advantage of many local, natural materials and gets design inspiration from their unique features. Therefore, no two pieces are exactly the same.

Dan hand forges blades out of O1 tool steel for a variety of different types of knives. From field and hunting knives, to culinary and cheese knives. He also hand forges other metal goods such as bottle openers.

Cosmetics Bags

In addition to hand forged knives and metal work, we make leather goods such as purses, totes, Dopp kits, cosmetics bags, wallets, keychains, and coasters, to name a few. We use Italian or American tanned leather for all of our leather goods, and we sew with a Cobra Class 3 leather sewing machine and bonded nylon thread.

All Hammer & Tine products are handcrafted with care and attention to detail by the two of us. We don’t outsource any of the work, and we take pride in the quality of our products. We welcome custom orders on a limited basis. However, because there are only two of us in the shop, we often have a waitlist. Please reach out to us using our contact form, or email dan@hammerandtine.com for more information on custom orders.

Check out our Facebook page or follow Dan or Kestrel on Instagram for updates on upcoming events! We attend a handful of art shows and markets through the year in addition to the Hamilton, MT Farmer’s Market nearly every Saturday in the summer!
