Blade material is a high carbon steel and will rust if not properly taken care of. When the tool is not in use for an extended period of time it should be protected by applying a light film of oil. The handle should also be rubbed occasionally with linseed oil to maintain its protective coating. The leather sheath can maintained by wiping with neatsfoot oil, allowing oil to soak in, then rubbing with a soft cloth to remove any excess.
